Scottish Water Adopt a beach campaign; Prestwick North beach survey and clean
Thanks to Fiona Burley, Volunteering programme coordinator from Scottish Water for the following piece:
Scottish Water’s volunteering programme was launched in spring 2011. Our programme covers Education, local community work, conservation as well as fundraising for WaterAid our chosen charity.
I organised our beach clean at Prestwick North on 8th of June, under our ‘Adopt a Beach’ campaign. This campaign allows employees to clean up a beach at least once a year near where they live or work and survey this at least once a year.
We work closely with Marine Conservation Society (MCS) and at every beach clean, we record the data taken from litter in a 100m section of the beach. MCS use this data and data collected from all over the UK in their campaigns to rid our beaches and seas of litter.
Our 11 volunteers consisted of Scottish Water employees and our alliance partners Caledonia Water Alliance (CWA) and Efficient Service Delivery (ESD). I am glad to say we didn’t find a lot of litter on the sand but there was some in the grassy area which we removed.
We all enjoyed our time at the beach clean knowing that we had made a difference for people using that area and that we had also helped MCS with their campaigns. www.scottishwater.co.uk
